5 Ways to Make Remote Working a Success

Lately everyone is trying their best to adjust to working from home. Whether it’s your first time working remotely or you’ve done it intermittently, we’re sharing five tips to help make your transition to full-time work-from-home a little easier.

1. Get ready for the day

While it may be tempting to work in your pajamas all day, try your best to get ready for the day just as you would going into your office or workspace. Maintaining your regular routine will help shift your mindset from ‘home mode’ to ‘work mode,’ setting you up for a day of success and productivity.

2. Set up a designated workspace

Just like it’s tempting to work in your comfiest clothes, it’s just as enticing to want to work from the comfiest place in your home — like a couch, cozy chair, or even your bed. But a more relaxing setup may tempt you to do just that, and pull your focus away from work. A designated workspace can also help eliminate distractions you don’t typically deal with at the office, like TV, kids, and pets.

3. Try the 90/20 rule

For maximum productivity at work, researchers suggest working in 90-minute intervals, followed by a 20-minute break. It’s based on your body’s ultradian rhythm, which is 90 minutes of high-frequency brain activity followed by 20 minutes of low-frequency brain activity. The idea is that you maximize productivity during your brain’s highest activity, and rest during its lowest. And, as a bonus, you’ll have scheduled breaks already worked into your day!

4. Stick to set work hours

Working from home can prove to be convenient for several reasons. You don’t have a commute, you can set your own hours, and you can more easily come and go as needed. But those conveniences can also work against you. How? Because your personal and work lives are no longer separate. As a result, you may find yourself hovering at your computer longer, checking and answering emails at all hours of the day, or working outside your regular office hours.

Once you set your work hours, stick to them by setting an alarm, completely unplugging, and stepping away from your designated work-space until the next workday.
